Organic growing or sustainable farming is not very much different from conventional farming. The only difference is Organic growing is done in a completely natural way by using natural fertilizers and pest control measures. Continue reading →

The last decade has seen a huge upswing in the demand for organic fruits and vegetables and all organic food stores and most supermarkets stock them. Organic vegetable gardening is what people looking at these days as they have realized that the use of fertilizers and pesticides do more harm than good. But the main reasons people have to not become involved in organic gardening are the time and effort that is needed to both start and maintain an organic garden. The organic gardening market is big business and many of the products available aren’t always the most effective tools to producing a healthy herb garden. Fortunately, there are a lot of good sites dealing with organics and a lot of good gardening books out there. Organic gardening is the practice of growing vegetables, herbs and fruits. Organic gardening has become a popular method for ordinary people to grow their own vegetables, using only natural methods of fertilization and pest-control. Although organic gardens can take time to build and require a certain amount of dedication, as an organic garden is safer, cheaper and more satisfying! Organic gardening is no harder than traditional gardening methods once you have how the basics in place.

One of the first things you should consider are the benefits that organic gardening will provide you and your family. Organic gardening is an extra benefit because everything that you will be eating is pesticide and chemical free which is healthier for you and your family. By growing it yourself, you can save yourself thousands of dollars a year in food expenses. They will not only be completely fresh and healthy but will have had a zero environmental impact. However to grow an organic garden is not as difficult as it might seem. Your organic garden should be free from chemical pollutants, like factories, machine shops or other hazardous materials detrimental for your organic products. Since you’re not using chemical fertilizers, you need to amend the soil with the proper organic compounds to feed the soil and in turn feed your plants. It takes time to improve your soil organically and see the fruits of your labors. You should also do your research as to see what crops for your organic garden would be best for your area. Other things to consider are the type of soil that you currently have and also how much sunlight exposure the plants that you want to grow will need. Sure, you can create an organic gardening paradise in your home, but you need a lot of space, light, and a desire to make it work indoors that is usually worthwhile once it is set up and going.

In Antonio, Texas, Greenhouse gases, produced from sewage are saved and now sold to different purposes, household use, and electricity production Continue reading →

In San Antonio, Greenhouse gases from sewage are saved and sold as energy

This week, a new biogas facility opened in San Antonio, Texas, and began turning greenhouse gases into a power source. Companies that partnered to develop and run the new facility are the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) which treats sewage and provides potable water and wastewater to about 1.3 million people in Texas, and Ameresco, a publicly traded energy services company.

The project captures methane gas that’s generated during sewage treatment, and directs this gas into a commercial, natural gas pipeline nearby so it can be sold, delivered and used as energy for heat and electricity generation. Typically, waste water facilities burn methane off in flares.

According to U.S. Environment Protection Agency research methane is about 21 times more powerful at warming the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, and has a chemical lifetime in the atmosphere of approximately 12 years. Methane’s relatively short life, coupled with its problematic potency as a greenhouse gas, makes it a candidate for mitigating global warming within 25 years, the EPA suggests.

In a press statement, Robert R. Puento, the chief executive and president of SAWS said “This project is a sound investment for our environment and our community. By reusing biogas instead of burning it off, we are helping protect the city’s air quality and developing a renewable energy resource.”

Ameresco will treat and transfer at least 900,000 cubic feet of methane gas from SAWS wastewater plant to a nearby commercial gas pipeline, where they will sell it on the open market. The gas will be used and sold as energy, and some royalties on the sale of the biogas will be returned to the water company and its customers, reducing its cost of operations, overall. SAWS expects to generate at least $200,000 a year from biogas sales.

Biogas has remained somewhat scarce in the U.S. consumer energy market. Once biogas has been captured, it remains a challenge to transport it for use in fuel cells like the ClearEdge5 or the Bloom Box or other systems.

BioEnergy Solutionsin Bakersfield, California has taken greenhouse gases from dairy manure, and directed it into Pacific Gas & Electric’s pipeline, and Cargill has embarked on a number of biogas projects worldwide, mostly involving agriculture industry projects, but Ameresco and SAWS claim theirs is the first biogas project of its kind in the country.

Environmentalists are eager to see more collaboration between large, public wastewater utilities and private sector or other companies that can help them curb methane emissions, while generating renewable and low emissions energy.

If you want to build organic soil matter around plant root zone of your garden Mycorrhizae fungi and beneficial soil biology should be your first choice. In my opinion Mycorrhizae fungi and beneficial soil biology are very effective in upgrading the quality of soil and also increasing its fertility. Today, markets offer successful and well researched soil biology product like Myco and Soil Blast. They work in all sorts of soil ranging from sand to clay to coco coir and can be used for both indoor and outdoor plants. Beneficials find place to process organic soil matter waste of plant to enriched organic plant nutrition. These products also work effectively in hydrophonic applications like coco coir and rockwool. In natural growing plants it tends to suffer from decaying organic soil matter and utilize low concentration of natural beneficial organism known to break all these particles naturally, with time.

Standing today, when soils are mixed to enhance its productivity it is an unfortunate truth that these soil microbes are either missing or stripped off due to external factors like pollution, excessive salinization etc. Thus, to regain or repair this important loss it is important to use products like Myco blast and soil blast to ensure the right level of organic soil matter in the soil. The blend of beneficials, fungi and soil bacteria in these products guarantee sound flow of processed organic materials to reach to plant roots directly. Thus, resulting in more level of nutrition for a healthy and faster growth of plant well equipped to combat hassle of high performance growing.

These organic gardening books are those that have had the most profound effect on me, and I have read a lot of gardening books. But these books are the best of the best, in my opinion.

Botany / Plants Book

The Secret Life of Plants. The authors of Secrets Of The Soil put out amazing organic gardening books and this classic is a look at the world of plants and their relationship to us. It goes into how plants can think, how they respond to music, and how they respond to being loved/being threatened, yet sprinkled throughout are many lessons we can actually use in the garden. Anyone who believes plants are sentient beings will love this book. A must read.

Microorganism Book

Teaming with Microbes. Healthy organic soil is teeming with life – not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. These guys make the benefits of cultivating the soil food web available to a wide audience, from us organic gardening and farming addicts to weekend gardeners who simply want to grow healthy, vigorous plants without resorting to chemicals. I highly recommend this as one of the organic gardening books for you.

Organic Soil Management Book

The Non-Toxic Farming Handbook. This book is not only for farmers! It is a successful integration of diverse techniques and technologies of classical organic farming, Albrecht-style soil fertility balancing, and Reams-method organic soil and plant testing and analysis, and it is great for organic home gardeners. It covers fertility inputs, in-the-field testing, foliar feeding, refractometers, tillage, livestock nutrition, moon cycles and subtle energies, and more.

Permaculture Book

Gaia’s Garden. This is one of my favorite organic gardening books for beginners. It describes an organic gardening system that combines the best features of wildlife habitat, edible landscapes, and conventional gardens into a self-renewing landscape that lets nature do most of the work. It has many good design principles, so it is partially a design book. This is my favorite introduction to permaculture because it is a fun read that really simplifies the topic. It’s not as comprehensive as Mollison’s works, but a great intro. I love this book.

Vegetable Gardening Book

The Gardener’s A-Z Guide to Growing Organic Food. This is one of those organic gardening books that shows you how to select, grow, harvest, and store more than 765 varieties of vegetables, herbs, fruits and nuts. Not all that much info on growing from seed and transplanting, but a pretty darn big encyclopedia of food plants and good information on vegetable garden layout.

General Organic Gardening Book

Working With Nature – Shifting Paradigms. This organic gardening book was the first written by one of my gardening mentors, Heide Hermary, founder of Gaia College. It describes ecologically sound organic soil and water management practices and introduces the concept of landscape health management. It summarizes some of the most important information from other books listed on this page, and more importantly, it makes connections between seemingly disparate topics.

GLOBAL WARMING

1. INTRODUCTION

The term Global warming is the forefront of many minds, and for several reasons. The earth’s climate is driven by energy from the sun. This energy heats the planet, which in turn radiates that heat back into space. However, much of this heat is retained by various greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide – and this is a good thing. Without each gas contributing to this natural greenhouse effect, life as we know it would not exist. Temperatures would be similar to our airless moon, ranging widely from 225°F during the day to negative 243°F at night. Obviously, this would not be an environment conducive for life. But due to greenhouse gases, the earth’s average temperature is a hospitable 60°F. However, problems arise when the concentration of these gases increase.

Global warming can occur from a variety of causes, both natural and human induced. Hence it is the responsbility of every individual in the universe to protect the earth from the Global warming.

2. CAUSES FOR GLOBAL WARMING

The causes for the global warming are as follows:

Natural causes

Human induced causes

Natural causes

Natural factors, such as changes in the sun’s intensity or slow changes in the Earth’s orbit around the sun.

Natural processes within the climate system (e.g. changes in ocean circulation)

Human induced causes

There are two primary causes namely:

Emission of Greenhouse gases

Deforestation

2.1 Emission of greenhouse gases

The emission of greenhouse gases which trap in the sun’s Infra red rays (Ozone layer Depletion) in the earth’s atmosphere, which in turn heat up the atmosphere.

The main gases contributing to the greenhouse effect are carbon di-oxide, Methane and Nitrous oxide.

Chart – 1

The chart–1, shows the percentage of different green house gases emitted in the atmosphere.

The sector analysis of greenhouse emission is:

1

Power station

-

21.3%

2

Industrial processes

-

16.8%

3

Transportation fuels

-

14%

4

Agricultural by-products

-

12.5%

5

Fossil fuel retrieval, processing and distribution

-

11.3%

6

Residential, Commercial and other sources

-

10.3%

7

Land use and Bio-mass burning

-

10%

8

Water disposal and treatment

-

3.4%

Table – 1

From the table-1 it is observed that 95% of climate change(golbal warming) is caused out by humans only.

2.2 Deforestation:

Deforestation is the hidden cause for Climate change. Deforestation will release as much as carbon di-oxide into the atmosphere.

The Deforestation results in:

Desication of previously moist forest soil

Dramatic increase in temperature extremes

Moist humid region changes to Desert.

No recycling of water

Less carbon di-oxide and nitrogen exchange

More Desertification

Soil erosion

3. EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING

1. The global warming has led to increase in mean earth surface temperature and thus melting of polar ice. There are frequent melt down of glaciers that result in floods and other natural calamities. The melting of ice at the poles had led the mean sea level. And further increase in temperature may further melt the ice and lead to further increase in mean sea level, which will engulf low lying countries.

The global temperature could rise by up to four degrees by the end of the century. Because of this warming, the sea level could rise on average by as many as 30 centimeters.

In 2003, extreme heat waves caused more than 20,000 deaths in Europe and more than 1,500 deaths in India.

The chart shows the rise in mean global temperature of the previous century.

Chart – 2

2. The effect of global warming is very evident on the animal kingdom also. Some animals have become extinct due to loss of their natural habitat or their inability to evolve to the rapid changes in the climate. Also there is a change in their life style because of the changes in the seasons. The migrating birds have changed their time of travel and also their place of migration.

Examples: Polar Bears live in the Arctic and are totally reliant on sea ice, which is vanishing faster than expected. Bears are so confused by rapidly changing weather cycles. Penguins face a similar plight. A few years ago, when two giant icebergs broken off the Antarctic ice sheet, it blocked the route from their breeding colonies to their feeding areas. As a result, they had to walk an extra thirty miles to reach food. No small task given that penguin’s average speed is one mile per hour.

3. The effect of global warming can be felt on seasons too. There is shift in season cycle, as the summers are getting longer than the winters. This has affected the animals and made them to change their lifestyle accordingly, and those who failed to do so have perished or on the verge of extinction.

4. Because of Global warming, the Earth’s atmosphere is getting more unpredictable with heavy rains in the areas, which have scanty rainfall or drought in the areas which received good annual rainfall. The months of the rainfall has also getting affected.

5. The global warming is also responsible for the introduction of some new diseases. The bacteria are more effective and multiply much faster in warmer temperatures compared to cold temperatures. The increase in temperature has led to increase in the microbes that cause diseases.

6. Global warming is also effecting the crop production, as the crops are getting destroyed by the sudden change in temperatures or sudden on set of rains. Also the flash floods and other natural calamities affect the crop.

7. Global warming doesn’t create hurricanes, but it does make them stronger and more dangerous. Because the ocean is getting warmer, tropical storms can pick up more energy and become more powerful.

8. Global warming could make large areas of the world uninhabitable and cause massive food and water shortages, sparking widespread migrations and war.

4. EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING IN FUTURE INDIA

Every one gets 38% of normal water during 2030.

Approximately 50 million peoples live in the coastal region will shift their residence to other areas before 2100.

The food production will decrease to 30% in future. There will be minimum rainfall, which results in water droughts.

Due to the melting of icebergs in the Himalayas, the Rivers Ganges and Yamuna will get dried.

The glaciers area in Tibetans plateau region will decrease to 1 lakh Sq.metre from 5 lakh Sq.metre during 2030.

5. OUR ROLE TO CURB THE GLOBAL WARMING

5.1. Reduce the usage of fossil fuels

The biggest cause of global warming is the carbon dioxide released when fossil fuels like oil and coal are burned for energy. So when we save energy, we fight global warming (and save money, of course). Here are some easy steps we can take:

Use of Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

Inflate our Tires

Buying a Fuel Efficient Car: A car that gets 20 miles per gallon will emit about 50 tons of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. A car getting 40 mpg will emit half that much.

Change our Air Filter

Use of recycled Paper

Buy Minimally Packaged Goods

Taking Shorter Showers

Chart – 3

5.2. Enhance the sources and the use of Renewable Energy

There is no fossil fuel consumption when using the renewable energy sources. It does not affect the atmosphere. Hence we have to use the renewable energy in some home and industrial appliances as far as possible.

Some of the major Renewable energy sources producing electricity are:

Wind

Sun light

Water

5.3. Afforestation

Even though on one hand we reduce the usage of fossil fuels and move on to the renewable energy sources, we are unable to control the Global warming. The reason behind this is Deforestation. Afforestation is the prime way to increase the absorption of carbon di-oxide from the atmosphere. The trees suck up the carbon di-oxide and make the air clean for us to breathe. So, all should have to plant trees and Government must take steps to prevent the Deforestation.

5.4 Curbing acid emissions

Over recent years, the UK’s and other countries’ governments have taken serious steps to reducing acid gas emissions. Desulphurisation plant is now fitted to many power stations, catalytic converters are compulsory on new motor vehicles. Unfortunately, both of these measures reduce the efficiency at which fuel is being used, resulting, for a given energy output, in higher emission of carbon dioxide. The real solution is to cut back on the use of fossil-fuels by reducing our dependency on cars, and by only using as much electricity as we need. In thee short term, switching to ‘cleaner’ fossil fuels, such as natural gas, can certainly help reduce sulphur dioxide emissions, but not, unfortunately, the equally important Nitrogen oxides emissions.

6. CONCLUSION

Thus Global warming, acid rain, ozone layer depletion and ground-level ozone pollution all pose a serious threat to the quality of life on earth. They seem to be separate issues, but, as has been, there are links between each. By reducing our dependence on fossil fuels we help prevent both acid rain and global warming. With appropriate reforestation we can help reduce the effects of acid rain, while at the same time increasing the uptake of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Regarding ozone layer depletion, the answer is simple; stop the manufacture and use of CFC’s and HCFC’s, a measure which, fortunately, and governments are taking steps to ensure.
